Greco-Bulgarian relations continue to sour as fascist dictator Georgios Kosmidis continues to hold National Union rallies throughout the Greek lands and advocate for massive expansion throughout the Balkans. Youth groups began to promote neo-fascist propaganda: advocacy of Greek/Byzantine expansion, Eastern Orthodox state religious authority, absolutism, anti-communism, and collective cooperation. Fascist paramilitary groups aided the state-enforced police forces and the military to suppress democratic and communist rallies and riots.
On the 23rd of February, 1938, the Greek State declared war on the Tsardom of Bulgaria. Being a new member of the Axis, Greece called upon Germany to intervene and send military aid in the conquest. In the first few months of the war, Bulgaria swiftly countered the Greek invaders and pushed into eastern Thrace and Macedonia, capturing Thessaloniki on the evening of March 27th.
Germany, seeing a potential for spreading its influence, sent military aid and forces to Greece, arriving onto the front by late April, and proceeding to halt Bulgarian advances. Throughout the months, from May to July, German aid and fresh forces pushed the Bulgarians out from Macedonia and eastern Thrace. German troops swiftly advanced into western Bulgaria, keen on capturing the capital of Sofia. On the 4th of August, both German and Greek forces, with high morale, captured Sofia, and swiftly advanced into the rest of the country the rest of the month.
On the 24th of August, Bulgaria issued a declaration of surrender. The two parties, Greece and Bulgaria, with Germany being involved, convened at Varna, Bulgaria, with the Greeks gaining complete control of all Bulgarian territories, with the demand from Germany to both remain in the Axis and to have dominant influence over the major Bulgarian cities. The Treaty of Varna was officially signed on the same day and Bulgaria was officially annexed by Greece.
